My First Speech

Strategically, I gave my first speech as leader of the Reborn States of America in a fairly large church, the Redhaven Episcopalian, in Duchesne’s Whites-only territory. White citizens and Christians were the largest groups I had to get behind me. If the more neutral republics did not wholly participate, we could still win. But without the White and Christian population, the Chinese zombie swarm would overwhelm us. The church itself held around 500 people, about a quarter in the balcony. The men mostly dressed in the now popular Founding Fathers look. Many women wore fashionable pioneer dresses. Richard Duchesne and Pastor Lewis each introduced me, with campaign-style intros, touting my leadership in New York City. Duchesne referred to the Monster Slayer action film series. I wondered if I would pale in comparison to my Hollywood image.

“Ladies and gentlemen, here in Redhaven Episcopalian, and those watching at home, may we please bow our heads in prayer?” As I said this, I particularly looked at Mr. Duchenese. And I did not start until I saw he had bowed his head. “Heavenly Father, please bless this, our initiation of our crusade. Please give us the inner strength, me and all of us in the Reborn States of America, the inner strength to reform and ready ourselves for the great struggle ahead. We understand that for good to prevail, the good must be strong, stronger than the evil which confronts it, stronger than the evil which tempts it to distraction. We ask you for the martial spirit necessary to fight with our enemy and with ourselves so that we may be victorious in all undertakings and live valiantly in your light, in name of the Heavenly Father and the Son Jesus, amen.”

I dwelt with my eyes closed, lingered for a moment, seeking a connection with God, with Jesus and thinking of Hitler’s oration style, his films, his image. I thought of the Monster Slayer actor too. Sometimes, when I prayed it took me a while to feel it. I searched. But I was preoccupied with finding my oratorical guide, Hitler. I had to start. When I opened my eyes, I looked to Duchesne, he looked calm. I looked out into the audience and saw Vinnie, flanked by Ernie and Carl, who had become my main lector — or heads of private security. I felt a reservoir of calm within me, the same calm I had felt in the river, and began.

“Ladies and Gentlemen, we find ourselves in a cosmic battle between life and death. This is the test and situation the Lord has put before us.” I leaned forward stiffly, talking just above a whisper. Hitler warmed up slowly too. “Yes. I will speak of violent confrontations to come. But,” and herein I raised my finger and pointed upwards for the first time, “I must also speak of the fight against spiritual death.”

As I supposed Hitler might, in the next section, I used calm angular movements to emphasize my meanings, much as a conductor
